Located in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty this project involved the large-scale extension of a detached period cottage. Taking the project on from conception through to completion the primary aim was to maintain the authentic charm of this cottage whilst sensitively achieving the client’s requirements for a larger functional family home.

Externally the meeting of the existing building and new extension was of great importance, the junction is detailed to create a light and elegant transition celebrated by a glazed link which wraps up and over the pitched roof. The existing and new forms relate through the continuation of the cottage’s gable end with the close-by thatched roof barn also continuing this language.

The extension uses a vertical scorched cedar timber cladding with a prominent stone chimney which ties back to the stone of the original cottage through materiality and its solidity.
